The jury can use common sense and since your dog was injuring the neighborhood children as I described they could say I innocent even though I said I took the dog, because I had good reason to take it.
Uh, no. Actually,
Jurors must follow the law--not their consciences--even when they strongly believe the law will produce an unjust result, the California Supreme Court ruled Monday.
It's been like that since 2001 and that's why I keep getting called back and never put on a jury. They tell me that part of my civic responsibility is to join in being willing to possibly permanently destroy someone else's life even if I think it's wrong. I am honest during voir dire. That's my problem but I make it theirs. If they still want to put me on a jury then part of using that common sense is responding while being told about my civic duty, "You know you're sounding like a villain, right? It's not me that is comfortable with an unjust outcome. Let's just be clear about that." So I get excused and just sit in the juror assembly room all day.
I would like to be a patent attorney but I know that's not the job for me because I'd be frustrated most of the time. Not because I'd have to explain really complex and technical details to underqualified jurors. I could probably handle that. The patent law needs a lot of reform. Dealing with bad law when I know it's bad law would leave me feeling like I was just spinning my wheels.
That's my decision though. Sorry to find out that your dreams of being an attorney were shattered. You probably would have made a great one but I have a feeling the stress would have taken a few years from your life. Maybe God wanted you to be on Earth a few extra years. I don't know.
For what it's worth here's a link to a video on the LegalEagle YouTube channel. Maybe it will give you a laugh.
