What a great twist!
In the best style of the great detective fiction. It reminded me of some of Poe's work and eventually Doyle and Christie's short stories.
The supernatural was ubiquitous in Poe's work, but in the detective stories he favored logic over anything else.
That being said, in some of the amazing brain work there seemed to be some of the supernatural that you describe here.
I like the fact that there is not a full recap at the end. That can be an annoying section. Better leave some open endedness for readers to decipher.
