I wanted to share with you today some images of one of the most colorful towns in the state of Sucre, Venezuela: San Antonio del Golfo. These images were taken from a moving car during our last visit to Carúpano, which is 134 Km from Cumaná.
San Antonio del Golfo
San Antonio is a fishermen and artesans town located 54 km East from Cumaná, the capital of the State of Sucre. Located on the coast of the Golfo de Cariaco, San Antonio boasted the best fish restaurants in the area. Now, most of those places are closed. Most of what they offer is unaffodable for the average traveler.
Surprisingly, despite the crisis, this is probably the only town in the state that looks like everything has just been painted.
Buses still stoped on thir long journeys (this was February), but unlike in the past when all passengers could order meals in places like this one, now most people either eat whatever they packed or just walk around and look at the placid waters of the gulf.
It was very common at all times, to see people taking pictures by the malecón. That has changed considerably in the last years.
Even the activity in the gulf itself has been affected. There are less fishermen doing their thing.
It looks prettier this way for me.
Unfortunately, we were unable to get the driver to stop to get better pictures.
This was for me about the only beautiful thing between Cumaná and Carúpano. The only part of the trip I usually enjoyed. I miss that. As soon as this crisis is over, I plan to take this road to visit my mother.
Maybe by then, life will be back to this town, along with the boats, the fish, and the affordable food.
