When I first started sharing Hive Legacies on Hive, the project was still much smaller than what it has already begun turning into. What started as a relatively simple game prototype has steadily grown into a persistent-world MMORPG built around exploration, survival, experimentation, knowledge, crafting, travel, trade, ownership, settlements, seasons, discovery, and eventually the histories created by the players themselves.
As the project has grown, it has become increasingly clear that Hive Legacies needs a home of its own. Today, that home is officially open.
Welcome to the Hive Legacies Community.
Up until now, most of what I've shared has understandably focused on development, and that will continue. The Hive Legacies community will now be the primary home for development logs, screenshots, major system updates, design discussions, testing progress, announcements, and deeper looks at what is being built behind the scenes.
But that is only what the community is for right now. The long-term goal is much bigger.
Hive Legacies is being designed as a world where information itself can have value. Players will experiment, discover processes, learn skills, find resources, establish settlements, travel between regions, produce goods, trade with one another, and gradually uncover how the world works.
If the game succeeds at what we're trying to build, eventually the most interesting posts in this community should not all come from me. They should come from the people living in the world.
Someone might publish a guide explaining what they learned about pottery. Another player might document an expedition into an area few people have explored. A settlement might announce that it is looking for blacksmiths, farmers, traders, or laborers. Merchants might discuss regional prices and trade routes, while other players share discoveries, stories, experiments, maps, political events, alliances, construction projects, or simply something strange that happened to them while playing.
Over time, those posts can become a record of the history of the world created by the people inside it, and Hive is an unusually good place to build something like that.
The community will be open for players, developers, Hive users, and anyone interested in following the project. You can expect to see Hive Legacies development logs and announcements, new systems and gameplay mechanics, screenshots and development previews, testing updates, eventual alpha and beta information, guides, experiments, discoveries, crafting knowledge, lore, player settlements, trade information, economic discussion, feedback, bug reports, balance discussions, and eventually stories created simply by people playing the game.
For now, most of that will naturally come from development. The community has intentionally been created for the game Hive Legacies is intended to become, rather than only the prototype that exists today.
I also want the community's position on AI to be transparent from the beginning. Hive Legacies is an independently developed project being built with the assistance of modern AI tools.
AI assists with parts of programming, development, research, organization, artwork workflows, documentation, and turning extensive development notes into more readable posts like these. What is being documented, however, is a real project.
The systems discussed in the Dev Logs exist in the game's code and database. The screenshots show the actual game. The design decisions, testing, changes, failures, and progress are all part of the real development process.
For that reason, AI-assisted content is explicitly allowed in the Hive Legacies community when it supports genuine original work. What is not welcome is AI-generated spam, plagiarism, deceptive content, or mass-produced material created simply to extract rewards.
I think there is an important difference between using these tools to help someone create something and using them to avoid creating anything at all. Hive Legacies intends to explore the former, and part of this project's story may eventually be demonstrating just how much a very small development effort can accomplish when these tools are used effectively.
The community is mostly empty today, and that is expected. We are building the place before the people who will eventually fill it arrive.
There is still an enormous amount of work ahead before Hive Legacies becomes the world I want it to be. Systems need to be built, tested, broken, redesigned, connected, balanced, and expanded. Every new mechanic also has to work alongside the systems that already exist, because the goal is not simply to build a collection of isolated features. The goal is to build a world where those features interact with one another in ways that create consequences, opportunities, and stories.
That foundation continues to grow.
Now Hive Legacies has its own place on Hive where that journey can be documented from development all the way through launch, and hopefully for years afterward as players begin creating histories of their own.
If you've been following the project through the first Dev Logs, subscribe to the new community and come along for the ride.
Build something. Discover something. Leave something behind.
