The first horse race in America takes place at Salisbury Plain on Long Island, New York.
Some details about the event:
Racing was already extremely popular due to the fascination by King Charles II. Charles encouraged the common person to attend and introduced older customs such as racing silks.
The first American breed of horse was the Narragansett Pacer. Historians believe the breed is a cross between Dutch and English breeds. This race was an attempt to encourage better breeding in the United States.
While breeding was the agenda, they handed out ribbons and trophies for placement.
1865
Confederate "greybacks" in the American Civil War capture Fort Stedman (located in Petersburg, Va) after a desperate pre-dawn assault in an effort to swing the tide of the war.
Some facts you may not have known:
The battle was lead by Major General John B. Gordon at the behest of General Robert E. Lee who had amassed a sizeable amount of his army (almost half) to break through Grants defenses at Petersburg.
Estimated casualties lie somewhere around 3,850. Of those, it's assumed that roughly 950 were Union and 2,900 Confederate.
The initial assault was led by a hand picked band of 'axe men' who's sole job was to chop down the defensive obstructions laid out by the Union troops.
1931
Germany and Yugoslavia come to an agreement under the Tripartite Pact and Yugoslavia joins the Axis powers.
The signing took place in Vienna at the Belvedere and was signed by Joachim von Ribbentrop, German foreign minister and Dragiša Cvetković, Yugoslav Prime Minister.
This agreement took months of intense negotiations before coming to fruition.
The excitement was short lived as the agreement was dissolved a mere two day after the agreement was signed as the government was overthrown in the Yugoslav coup d'état of March 27th, 1941.
