Alchemy's first law of exchange, also known as the law of equivalent exchange, states that people cannot gain something without giving something in return. In other words, to get something of equal value, something of equal value must be lost. Alchemists believe that this law applies to many situations, including acquiring a new skill, healing a loved one, or even resurrecting the dead. The law also deals with concepts like love and sacrifice.
