These berries aren't actual berries at all! They are actually female seedcones with fine scales that fuse together to form what looks like a berry. We have several of these trees along our small road. This particular one must have had a good season as it was covered in berries!
The berries are very aromatic and are steam-distilled to make essential oils. This oil is good for bloating, sore throats, respiratory infections, insomnia, heartburn and more.
As a rule, do not grow junipers or cedars near apples trees as they are susceptible to cedar rust disease, which I have seen and it is pretty gross.
