Let's play..Before you play this game, please read that review..
Night in the Woods is a game about little things like having dinner at an evening gambling restaurant with friends; spontaneous roof appearance; talking about ghosts with punk crust just sitting on the outskirts of the city. Moments like this come and go faster than you can swing bats in a bulb dumped behind a local snack, but because of their sincere writing and good humor help, they also persist in my mind long after they have passed. Mean while, some problems goes the excitement of half-adventure rolling down the side of the story, I never stop feeling invested in the personal story of an adorable anthropomorphic animal actor, whose struggles and lack of individuals make him shocking to humans and often very difficult to volunteer.
Margaret "Mae" Borowski is a 20-year-old college dropout, a naughty cartoon cat girl who came out of college and returned to her hometown at Possum Springs after a few years of being away. She meets up with her old friends, including gloomy but intelligent Beatrice "Bea" Santello, break stuff and hang on to a life of aggressive aimlessness. She dropped out of college and returned home to her crumbling old mining town to do just that, but she's finding that nothing is the same anymore. Mae is as confused as her as a troublemaker, and sees how her sometimes embarrassing history emerges as she babbles herself with this entertaining and captivating city. A frequent dialogue option lets you influence the general tone or direction of multiple interactions, but the best example of this is the conversation that lets you build your own backstories. Mae eventually wakes up and returns to her friends, and she reveals that the reason she dropped out was due to her increasing dissociation from people and the world.
Night in the Woods is an adventure game focused on exploration, story, and character, featuring dozens of characters to meet and lots to do across a lush, vibrant world. After a successful Kickstarter, it was made by Infinite Fall, a teamup of Alec Holowka (Aquaria), Scott Benson (Late Night Work Club), and Bethany Hockenberry. Small mini games add a pleasant variation to your interactions: shoplifting, beating up old cars, and playing in a band are just some of the things that Mae can do while at home. Sometimes I even find myself sucked into Demon Tower, a pixelated dungeon crawler on Mae's laptop, before jumping into bed and triggering the next day in his adventure.
Most of the main interactions also encourage Mae to draw a sketch in his notebook, which serves as a collection of fond memories for your time at Possum Springs and adds a bit of charm or context to your daily routine. Depending on who the player interacted with the most throughout the course of the game, Mae will sit down with either Bea or Gregg and talk about the events of the previous night, and all the things that have happened in Possum Springs.
But for all the comedy and light of his cartoons, Night in the Woods was able to surprise the sadness, which added an unexpected depth that made my time with his character much more meaningful. Mae's poor attitude and immaturity is sometimes a captivating part of her personality and is sometimes an annoying trait, but it always fits the purpose - the humor and sarcasm that make me laugh in one scene can destroy me in the next year, because Mae's behavior begins unintentionally alienate What he loves Night in the Woods about human vulnerability, especially the inevitable fears of adulthood, is a surprising element that artworks of funny and cartoonish (but still beautiful) do not let at first sight.
