Bartłomiej Strobel was a court painter of Polish king Vladislaus IV. He was born in Silesia (baptised in Wrocław). Strobel was an erudite artist who most probably visited the court of the emperor Rudolph II in Prague and had close ties with poet Martin Opitz (who also moved to Poland later). Strobel was a lutheran but worked also for catholic clients. His mannerist compositions show considerable skill and imagination (most important is the Fest of Herod with Beheading of St. John the Baptist in Prado). He moved to Gdańsk in 1934 and quickly started a new career in Poland. Strobel decorated numerous churches and abbeys and was working as a portrait painter. In 1643 he converted to catholicism. His decorative painting is a monument to Poland at the height of its development before the disastrous Swedish invasion.
