We got our first-ever chickens 6+ weeks ago, and I just love ‘em!

We bought two different varieties online: light brahmas and white Plymouth rocks. They are fine looking birds, if you ask me.

We went with a Brahma mainly for their size (14-18 lbs.) and they are good for cold winters (short combs and feathered feet.)

We wanted a second variety and thought the Plymouth Rock would be a good duel purpose to experiment with.

Did you notice the bigger chicken in the first photo?

We started out with 25 chicks in our garage. Then when the coop was up, we moved them out there. Well, one night we had some high winds. We didn’t have the coop locked, and wouldn’t you know it, the winds unlatched the doors! Combine an open coop with no surrounding fence, and you’ve got a dog ready to have unsupervised play time.

Needless to say, Chester was in big trouble! I was told it was a blood bath..however, one managed to hide from the predator and pulled through.

We think it’s a rooster. Does it look like a he? It’s 7ish weeks old.

The fence is up now. Chester still keeps his eyes on those chickens though!

I see he’s starting to kill the grass from running around the fence scaring those chickies.

I can’t wait to see them all full grown, and the kiddos sure love checking up on them every day! I will keep you updated as the season goes on.
