The seasons may not have ‘officially’ changed yet, but it is definitely autumn. The garden’s production is slowing down with the cool temperatures, but everything feels ‘richer,’ somehow. As if the plants know they only have a short time left before the frost, and so they are doing their best work.

We have gathered more wild apples, I am picking and selling our concord grapes, and we have begun keeping a fire going in the furnace. Our pumpkins are about ready to pick. It has been sunny, occasionally windy, and I can feel the change in the air. The earth is preparing for a good, long sleep.

I am looking forward to rest. I often feel like I left the “rat race” to pursue my Calling to play and write music (of which poetry is a large part), only to keep up the breakneck pace. I need to let go of that habit. Slow down and savor life.
