I almost never want to go out on weekdays with the traffic and resulting stress that always comes with it, but one thing I absolutely enjoy though is the fact that you will most certainly experience something new in Lagos.
A lot of time when we hear about scams and fraudulent activities, the first thing that comes to mind are the numerous online encounters. I think many people are fast becoming fraudulent without even realizing their running a scam.
I was in the bus as usual on a Monday morning and as always, there was a bit of traffic. I hadn't eaten anything that morning so being stuck in traffic left me irritated.
Got into an argument with the the bus conductor when I couldn't get my change and he eventually had to pair me with another passenger dropping in the same busstop as I was.
Most of the time I would leave the money for the other passenger, but this time around I wasn't leaving my change. We were still contemplating on how to split the money when the aroma of flour hit me, someone was frying something heavenly and my stomach was growling like it hadn't seen food in two weeks.
I spotted a lady selling doughnuts alongside other snacks and with the queue lined up, I was sure the taste would be out of this world.
It was either stay with the other passenger and find change or let him go with the money and then join the snacks queue.
The aroma was too good to pass up, so I smiled and told him to go with the money as I proceeded to join the queue.
My stomach was doing a growling practice as it kept making noise, luckily there were no beautiful ladies on the line so I was only mildly embarrassed. Though I'm not even sure the hunger in me would've even minded if there were any on that line.
After what seemed like hours and some really intense praying to all the food gods I knew, it eventually got to my turn and I bought two doughnuts.
Normally I prefer doughnuts with jam, but not everyone made them that way. This lady was one of them but judging from what I was perceiving, I knew it would taste great all the same.
I was about to leave when I took my first bite and I stopped chewing immediately, this woman had just successfully scammed me.
Firstly, there was no jam which I was already aware of before I bought them, then then was no sugar covering the doughnuts which I didn't really mind, lastly the doughnuts was not tasting like a doughnut.
I mean what's the essence of eating a doughnut when you can't experience the sugary taste in it.
I went back to the lady and whispered Madam, didn't you add enough sugar when mixing? to which she replied Don't be annoyed, sugar is very expensive now.
She was smiling and trying to placate me, but I didn't even know when I walked away.
She had given me hope that I was about to enjoy something nice from the aroma I'd perceived, only to dash my hopes.
I found a corner to eat my tantalizing aromatic dougnut and even though I didn't enjoy it, I finished it and somehow convinced myself to buy one more extra.
It was after eating, I remembered that I allowed the passenger from earlier go with my change just to have a taste of these same doughnuts.
I'm still contemplating whether or not to report the lady to the police on charges of willfully misleading the general public.
I mean it's my duty to report all forms of fraudulent acts as a concerned and patriotic citizen.
