Reading books began for me like one of those scientific black hole where once you're caught in it, there's no escaping till you fully immerse yourself in it.
I find it funny sometimes when I hear don't judge a book by its cover, because covers were the very first point of attraction towards reading books for me.

I say pity because of two reasons, firstly the whole reading thing back then was more picture focused than actual interest in the words written and secondly my mum believed I was wasting quite a lot of money on comics instead of actual books.
I first got to know about e-books probably around 2010 when I started downloading my favorite comics online but before then it was always hard copies.
I've owned quite a number of books in hard copy over the years, unfortunately they get gifted out to other people after awhile.
My permanent love for e-books came about on my birthday when I was in my second year in the university. A neighbor gifted me six book from the series titled Chosen by Tedd Dekker, all in hard copy.
Then my classmate in school sent me a file where he'd arranged all of James Hadley Chase books by year of release (I can't remember how many they were, but it was quite a lot).
If you knew me about nine years ago, then you'd realize how much of a sucker I was for the Chase books.
Both knew how much I loved books and I appreciated their gestures, but I could simply move around with hundreds of ebooks on my flash drive compared to the physical books which I could only take a limited amount with me whenever I went out.
It didn't take magic to figure out which side of the fence I was on.
The only books in hard copy I've bought for awhile now have only been for sentimental reasons, like one time I bought J.R Tolkien The Hobbit simply because I was passing by, saw it and had to have it.
In the end I eventually had to gift it out because I have issues with books taking up so much physical space.

For so long e-books have been my preference even though I've had bitter experiences as well.
I once had a bad day when all the files on my external hard drive got corrupted and unfortunately they contained most of the library of e-books I'd accumulated over the years. I estimate the e-books to about five thousand at that time.
I still have a few physical books lying around the house, but the only reason I still have them is because they were originally my sister's and for some reason I've not had the courage to give them away.
So for me, e-books are my reality.
