How do you know when it's time to give up on something you have been yearning or fighting for?

The world of emotions is a realm unto itself. They are there and real, and yet cannot be manifested directly into this physical world. The fact that they can hurt, they can make you smile and sometimes make you go numb is something that shows us how real they can be. And yet when we talk about their existence, we have to talk about them in an abstract manner.
I can try to submit a clean cut and a logical answer to your question, but the way you asked this question makes me want to give a deeper and a meaningful reply. When you use the word 'yearning' in your question, it implies to me that your question holds a deep emotional connection. I am grateful to say that it's significance is not lost on me.
As a person who has been dealing with something similar, I will admit that I haven't dealt with my problems in the best way. Nevertheless, I have learned that you cannot really sway your heart from something that it desires. Sure, you can create temporary distractions that would allow you a s few moments of relief from the mess of it all but in the end we all need to return to reality.
I think that the first thing to understand about this situation is the difference between 'giving up' and 'letting go'. I am the only person that can decide this for myself and same goes for someone else. Giving up will tie you down and never let you be free. On the other hand, Letting go of something will free you in so many ways.
Obviously there are patterns to these things but I can only share with you the ones that I understand and I know that they can work for me. I am not sure that these patterns will be helpful to others. Still I want to share them with you...
Usually when I am done with something, I tend to find that prolonging my relationship with it/them usually ends up being a burden for all parties involved. I have always had difficulty recognizing this so I am more than a little wary of these situations.
I also find that if I subconsciously give up on something even as I convince myself that I am 'letting go', then it ends up being a restless and an unfulfilling time in my life. My past experience is that I have never been able to make a good decision about my future plans after that. On the other hand if I truly let go of something than my mind is able to analyze the situation even as I feel like 'shit'. Sorry to use the 's' word but I don't really want to use euphemisms for something genuine. Perhaps it is one of the biggest reasons that slangs became so popular!
I hope that my reply helps. Even if I am wrong and still this reply helps somebody in finding the right answer, I'll be so happy. No matter even if this answer only amounts to just another thing that is not to be done in the process of elimination.
