Maybe you read these, maybe you don't but a while ago I told you about building a Lego Porsche This set is a unusual one, in that you have to make a choice towards the end to finish the car as a Turbo or a Targa
I choose the Turbo, Now it's not unusual for a Lego set to be able to built into different things, but this is normally a full set - you don't get 85% of the way in and then 'Choose your own adventure it' but the bigger question for me is how do you change from Turbo to Targa, which is what I'm doing today.
The Answer is you unbuild for a while. There were 61 steps from that choice page to the finished Turbo version, the only way I could see to logically get back to the decision point was to do the steps in reverse and take pieces of the car.
Now the book says the parts for the Turbo where in bags 8 and 9 and the Targa bags 8 and 10, that means half the parts I need are in a unopen bag and half are on the car, and of course there are also pieces on the car that I no longer need.
So basically I need to remove:
The rear wheel arches
All the wheels
the rear axle
the rear spoilers
the roof
and some of the engine.
I started carefully enough, piece by piece, I got bored fairly quickly and started taking off whole sections, I mean I knew the whole of the spoiler or the roof needed to come off. It also a vert weird feeling de-building something in a logical manner, it's just feels wrong.
Eventually we had this - as you can see a fairly large pile of things have come off and the car is stripped back to a long way.
Then it's time to get the bag of new pieces and start the rebuild
And I immediately come up against the nemesis of any Lego builder - the 'I can't find this piece' panic. Now I know that Lego don't ever leave parts out so I've done something wrong. I need to 8 X 2 grey plates and I only have one, I examine the pile of pieces that came off the car, no grey pieces of that size, I spend 5 minutes thinking I'm going insane and then I realise I should have taken the pieces off the car one by one, not a whole sections. The piece I need is buried in the roof, sandwhiched between two white pieces, not visible.
So I take apart every piece in that pile and then, well it's smooth sailing, and within about 30 mins my Porsche 911 Turbo has become a Porsche 911 Targa. My favourite part in this, the awesome 'glass' roof over the rear sets, again Lego amazed me with their parts usage.
So after all the Lego Models I've build, this was a whole new experience, which is what is great about Lego, every model is slightly different.
