John Krasinski managed to keep me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire film.
A Quite Place is set in a rural American town 89 days after a monstrous species with super sensitive hearing and a murderous streak arrived on Earth. Following the story of a family of four with a new baby on the way, it masterfully creates connection with the characters with the most minimal use of dialogue (or sound for that matter).
It is such a tight story line. It does nothing in the way of providing a prologue to introduce the alien species or a backstory of the characters and it definitely works in the films favour. I really respect this method and Krasinski did a great job of pulling it off. It cut down on cliches and pumped up times of suspense.
The use of sound throughout this movie is to be commended. It made me genuinely appreciate the slightest noise not only in the movie but in the world around me after leaving the cinemas. Sound can mean the difference between life and death and the director makes you feel that throughout the film by restricting it to build tension and unleashing cacophonies when needed.
