Samsung Electronics said it will produce the second generation 8GB (GB) HBM2 DRAM 'Aquabolt'.
The 2.4Gbps second generation 8GB HBM2 DRAM AquaVolt based on 1.2 volts (V) can process 307GB of data of 61 full HD movies (5GB) in one second, Which is 9.6 times faster than 32 gigabytes (GB) of data transfer rate per second.
In particular, with four 2.4 Gbps 8GB packages in one system, it can handle up to 1.2 terabytes (TB) of data per second, improving performance by up to 50% over the 0.82 TB of existing 1.6 Gbps based systems.
Samsung Electronics decided to name the second generation HBM2 DRAM product 'Aquabolt', which is a combination of 'Aqua' and 'Bolt'. The first generation 2.0 / 1.6Gbps 8GB HBM2 DRAM was named 'Flarebolt'.
Through the mass production of the aqua bolts, Samsung Electronics will supply the industry's only HBM2 DRAM lineup from flare bolts to aqua bolts. The company plans to triple the premium HBM2 DRAM market, including supercomputers (HPC) and graphics cards.
The AquaVolt is made up of a package of eight 8Gb chips stacked on one buffer chip. Samsung Electronics explained that it achieved the industry's first 2.4Gbps operating speed through the application of key technologies such as 'signal transmission optimization design' and 'heat control'.
First, the signal transmission optimization design technique minimizes the signal transmission rate variation of each silicon through electrode (TSV) so that HBM2 DRAM maintains the highest performance.
Thermal control technology then controls the temperature of the chip by placing more non-electrical junction thermal bumps that emit heat between the 8Gb HBM2 DRAM chips. Samsung also added a thin shield to the bottom of the aqua bolt package to prepare for external shocks.
