Human waste disposal is a problem everywhere. In the big cities waste is flushed and washed away to treatment plants. In many parts of the country septic tanks are utilized. We use composting toilets and place the waste in bins to be composted for a year before using it on our fruit trees and berry bushes. Actually, we are getting more then what we can use.

For the past couple of years we have managed with just eight compost bins for our family of six. This year however, for some reason the bins were filling more quickly. Because waste disposal is second in importance to water on the homestead, I needed to build four more compost bins. We now have a total of 12 bins, so I am hoping they will last for a while because we are running out of room.

I think I mentioned in a previous post that the bins are made of 2x4 pressure treated lumber and the sides are cedar fencing cut to 36 inches long.

Besides adding four new bins, I put up a fence to keep the chickens out. We do not like the chickens around the compost. They make a mess digging holes and it is unsanitary.

It is estimated that 2 million tons of human waste is dumped into the world’s water ways, so you could say we are doing our part.

Have a great day! Every comment is up-voted to show our appreciation and thanks for your up-vote, Tim and Joann.
