Decentralizing the Taboo

While I was in Korea, I did an entire series on the banning of pornography in the country and what I believe to be the consequences of constricting free access to the adult material. If you missed them you can read about them all here – Part 1, Part 2, Part 3. In short, I believe that limiting free access, effectively illegalizing it, has actually engendered terrible behavior and created subindustries that are more difficult to regulate and directly harmful to many citizens. Whatever you think of pornography or those who watch it, I believe that any individual in the developed world should have access.

That's why I was excited to see an upcoming ICO, built on Steem technology, that would flip this all on its head.

Vice is a Smart Media Token that decentralizes porn, I'd imagine in a similar way to dtube@dtube, and rewards viewers with the native token. Production companies could reward consumers that view, engage, share, and possible even help produce these videos! As it stands now, anywhere between 30-40% of the internet is sexual content and part of a X00 billion-dollar global industry. It would only make sense that blockchain would eventually tackle such a domain.

First off, I think this is tremendous for populations who have high internet access but live in countries that blockade porn – i.e Korea, China. We live in a global society where free access to all types of information, no matter how unsettling to some, should be encouraged on principal. Putting this information on a growing blockchain, accessible through an ever-increasing number of interfaces, will help get around the government dampening of this material.

Second, this supports the coming wave of decentralized advertising on blockchain media. One of the less understood implications of crypto is the capacity for its variants to capture value. Here on Steem, we're rewarded for content and curation. For other platforms, a value could be being an active and consuming audience member. We've seen with cryptos like BAT – the Basic Attention Token – that advertising can be revamped to incrementally rewarded engaged viewership. Whether it's ads or pornographic movies, the value of the viewer is coming into form.

Third, it's awesome to see SMTs already in the works. In case you didn't know, the Steem blockchain is currently handling the highest amount of data transactions compared to any other existing blockchain. Even after 1.5 years since launch, we're only at 0.3% capacity. There's so much space – both literally and conceptually – with how this tech can be leveraged for all types of media.

Freeing Free Information

The internet should be 100% free in theory. Even if some sites come with paid access or service, they should be accessible to those who wish to access it. This is the ethic of the information age.

If you've been following US news and legislation, you know that this ethic is being compromised as we speak. The repealing of net neutrality means the corporations can begin to manipulate what we can access at to what degree of exposure. From my humble perspective, this is unacceptable.

It only makes sense that the pornographic industry is one of the first to blaze a trail towards freedom of access and experience. They are of course one of the biggest stakeholders in internet liberty. Porn is one of the first to go in heavily regulated conservative societies. If pornography can break from the binding of government departments and regulatory agencies there is great hope for all information in all domains.

Nothing stirs up the fire of conversation like naked guys and gals. Let me know what you think below. What does the future hold for freedom of access? How will blockchain transform these norms?
