The first saying I heard about Expats in Costa Rica in 2005 was, "Costa Rica land of the wanted and unwanted."
Much of the dregs of society, dream chasers, scammers, losers, and their ilk seem to have a trail through Latin America they try to disappear but normally in the areas with many tourists and local Expats.
Macs is where I have met many a character locals, Expats, people from all over.
Many a good time there in my first year in Costa Rica.
My favorite line to use is, "We are all here because we are not all there."
It sums up the Expats I have known over the last 17 years here.
It is definitely a road that has been traveled by many over the years there always seems a similarity in the type of people I meet.
Here in Guatemala, besides the above Expats, there are tons of missionaries.
