I had no other choice than to keep booking it, running as fast and as hard as my fragile, paper thin legs could carry. I wasn't sure where I was going, my vision was blurred and warped, the only sound that seemed to break the barrier plane of this existence was the sound of a high pitched ringing that almost deafened me. I didn't know which way to turn, all I knew was that I had to get away from that... THING!
I make a sharp left turn and enter the woods. I was running so fast, and so concentrated on not falling, I wasn't able to fully pay attention to where I was going or how to get out. I ran what felt like 3 miles (in reality, it was only a half a mile) into the woods. I heard a high pitched shriek coming a good distance behind me, and I slowed down, and quietly looked for a place to hide.
The forest was kind of creepy in it's self. The trees were all dead and black, with molded bark slowly peeling it's self away from reality. The darkness that fell around it was too eerily dark from what is considered the norm. And the wind.. There was something about that wind that gave me the feeling of death.
As quietly as I could, I walked over to the nearest huddle of trees, and I crouched inti the darkest part if the shadowiest tree I could find, curling up into a ball of blackness and pulling my Hood over my head.
For a while, there was utter silence.. And for a moment, there was a blissful serenity that fell upon these old woods. I strangely started to feel and odd sense of comfort in the darkness. But just as soon as it came to light, the serenity and bliss was soon robbed away and shredded by heavy, droning footsteps, chains chattering against another, and the spine-chilling growl of that beast that was after me.
However, I did not panic. I simply remain as silent as I could possibly force upon myself, and I remained planted in place, feeling like a heavily cemented gargoyle statue forever glued to the ground.
For the longest time, nothing really happened. The thing just walked around and casually uprooted the bushes and shrubbery and over turned any stone it could find .
This thing was horrid. It had a long pale body of what looked like a mixture of bones and straw. It wore a simple grey cloth around it's sickeningly thin waist. It had large chains hanging off it's twigish body, and it had the head of a stereotypical jack-o-lanter. This thing carried around this huge scythe. The handle was bad out of strong bone, and the blade was made from the finest platinum. Sharper to the finest razor sharp point possible to achieve.
I watches this thing for over an hour. And for some reason, I felt sorry for the thing. It looked hopeless, strained, depressed...
This.. Creature.. Made me feel the weirdest sense of humanism in it, but before I could even get another thought to my head, the thing dropped to the ground, and started bawling. It slumped it's head onto it's boney fingers and just sobbed like a man who lost his child... Then, I remembered.
The local Crook of the town told me about this creature.. He wasn't always a creature. He used to be a living being, a man in fact! He had a son as well. A young, bright hearted temperamental boy who had his heads in the clouds, but he was the sweetest thing. The soul in that body belonged to Jakoby Wentworth, and his little boy was Chase Shaddox.
But one day, Chase unfortunately died in a horrific accident with his mother.. She was drinking and irresponsibly driving with the boy in the car... She made an illegal U-turn and drove on the wrong side of the road. They hit three cars and flipped into the forest. Chase Died a slow and agonizing death.
When Jakoby found out his pride and joy was gone, he couldn't handle it. His baby boy, his life, was taken away from a drunken whore..
Jakoby ended up jumping off of his roof one Halloween, he fell into a pumpkin patch. And his spirit was reincarnated into this humanoid thing. Damned to spend eternity trying to make peace with the war if the winds.
That was Jakoby in front of me, trying to reconnect with his baby boy...
I slowly stood to my feet and took off my Hood. I was silent for a moment, then I stepped into view.
Jakoby looked my in the eyes and let out the most sad, pitiful growl imaginable. A huge lump of fear rose in my throat, but I quickly swallowed hard, balled up my fist, and spoke.
"Jakoby?" I spoke in the calmest time of serenity I could conjour up. And he just looked at me with utter surprise, but he didn't speak.
"You are trying to reconnect with Chase, aren't you..? "
I watched quietly as tears slipped down his hallow pumpkin head.. And once again, he started bawling. I remembered the man saying that he had to make a sacrifice of someone kind and pure hearted in order to rejoin with Chase. And without a moment of hesitation, I decided to help a poor soul out.
I walked up calmly, and put the razor tip edge if the blade to my throat. I swallowed the lump of fear out of my throat, and I looked Jakoby in the eyes, and whispered, "go on, take my soul and reconnect with your little boy"
His face, twisted into a distorted smile, and without another moment, the blade was quickly drug across my throat, and after two minutes of agony, I bled out, and faded away.
I opened my eyes to find myself in a forrest. It was calm, lush, colorful and serene. Everything about it was absolutely beautiful. I couldn't help but to laugh with eagerness and leap up and prance around. And then in a short moment, I heard a beautiful whistle from behind me. I turn around and I saw Jakoby and Chase behind me, smiling. I smiled back and ran over to them, they both stepped forward and we threw our arms over one another and the three of us hugged each other all at once. Chase laughed, and Jakoby pulled me into a hug of his own and whispered, "thank you.."
We bother exchanged a few tears, and let go. I ruffled Chase's hair, and then grabbed his hand. Then I grabbed Jakoby's and smiled. He smiled at me, and we all took off walking towards the light, damned to remain in eternal happiness.
