There may have been a few things left and I did score my silver ounces this week.
The only "junk silver" left were an assortment of dimes.
No quarters, no half dollars, just dimes and 40% Kennedy Half Dollars. The gold coins which last week had been on display were all gone. There were no silver rounds left and the premium on the Eagles was $10.
Since I took the time to make my weekly trip, and the shop only had dimes, my eyes wondered a bit to the bin of Peace Dollars.
The Peace Dollar was minted in the years 1921-28 and again in 1934-35.
And while it is technically "junk silver" because of a more limited quantity the premium is slightly higher. The coin replaced the Morgan Dollar to commemorate the ending of the Great War. Antonio de Francisci, an immigrant from Palermo, Sicily designed the coin.
Remember, that was the War to end all Wars.
The face of the coin is the Goddess Liberty in profile. The reverse of the coin is one of my personal favorites.
The American Bald Eagle perched upon the "rock" of PEACE, with an olive branch in its talons.
Do you notice what is missing from the eagle's talons?
In the Great Seal of the United States the eagle holds in one talon, the Olive Branch, the symbol of Peace. That is Biblical by the way, after the Great Flood, Noah sent out a Dove that returned with an Olive Branch, a sign of God's Peace with mankind.
In the other talon the American Eagle is holding a bundle of arrows signifying War. Thus a message to all Nations. Shall we have Peace or Shall we have War!
On the reverse of the PEACE Dollar the arrows are missing.
