Fun Fact: At the beginning of the war with Mexico the United States had a very small Army. President Polk asked each State to issue a call for 2,600 volunteers to serve in the Army. When the call for Volunteers went out in Tennessee, instead of 2,600 men, over 30,000 men "volunteered" to serve in the Army thus forever giving Tennessee the nickname of The Volunteer State.
