Past records show that Bangladesh has seen severe floods in the year following El Niño. This time, the floods are happening even before El Niño. A very strong El Niño occurred in 1987. The following year, in August-September 1988, Bangladesh experienced one of the worst floods in the country's history. Another strong El Niño effect was seen in 1997. The very next year, in 1998, Bangladesh experienced severe floods that lasted for about two months. El Niño was active around 2006-2007, after which or at the time of which major floods occurred in Bangladesh. This time, floods have hit Bangladesh during El Niño. Floods are still ongoing in the southeastern part of the country. The possibility of this flood being prolonged cannot be ruled out. Moreover, according to past records, there is a fear of even bigger floods in Bangladesh next year.
