Hand fans have been very important in history and also in the present day. In Pakistan, we face summer for about 7 to 8 months and also face power shortage, most families in rural and urban areas still use hand fans. These fans are different from the foldable fans used in China, Japan or any other Asian country.
I had a few hand fans at home but they were all in a very bad condition so being an artist I thought why not give my old hand fan a new makeover? I took a hand fan and opened it carefully so that I could understand the science behind making these fans.
I watched a lot of videos on making a hand fan, until I reached a level of satisfaction that I could make one.
But when I started making it, I realized that it wasn't as easy as I thought... So today, instead of sharing the process of making a hand fan, I'm going to share the experience and the problems I encountered while making a hand fan.
As I also tried a hand fan for the first time, how can I teach someone what I have no expertise in? So shall we?
I learned that the stick used in the hand fan has to be cut in half and thankfully my brother helped me cut it otherwise I would have cut myself but still the wood wouldn't cut馃槵.
The next challenge was fixing the base of the hand fan inside the stick. Ah, it was so annoying the stick was dancing in my hands馃檮馃檮
While I was done playing World War 3 with a base and a stick, I found World War 4 was grinning at me with evil eyes馃槖. Guess what happened? I needed a large needle and thick thread to attach the stick to the base, but all I had was a small needle and regular thread. I went through my whole house like a roller coaster but I couldn't find both of those things so feeling sorry for my situation I chose to make a hand fan with what I had. I folded the plain yarn four times to make it thicker and more unbreakable.
Thanks to my skill in picking fabric, I chose a fabric that was nothing but useless. Every time I tried to use the needle, the fabric made me realize that I wasn't making a hand fan, but sewing. I think it was some kind of silk fabric.馃
One thousand hours later, when I had completed almost everything I thought would have a hard time doing, I moved on to the last step. But the last step made me realize "Oh darling don't be so happy I'm still here for you."馃ケ
The last step was to add the beads to the frill and for this step, I watched the tutorial video at least 5 times, sometimes even at 0.5x speed馃.
Finally, after so many tiny world wars the hand fan is ready to present, and here are the final results.馃憞
Another one 馃憞
That's it for today, will be back with another exciting and new creative idea.... Bye Bye馃お
