When it comes to texture work i define my textures in 3 groups.
- Passive
- Active
- Semi-active
Why? Because i define objects, energy, and time 3 essentials factors to define the categories where my textures belong. I capture energy and time throughout my pictures. My field is urban energy with a factor of decay and human activity.
I dont do nature photos (even though i like them) and use very little organic living forms. Water is so far the only organic compound that can be used in my photographs.
97% of my work is with non-organic, not living matters. I dont do wood or stone or any natural elements for textures even though they could be also included in my textures categories or might have a little presence in my photographs, they certainly not my main ingredients when making pictures.
To define the category i look first at the Object on what my texture exist:
Is it abandonned or not in use or incapable in producing movement ? If yes, the texture is more than likely a decaying texture.
Natural elements and time are the main source of composition of those ones.
And In this case the texture is passive.
Passive because the energy produced is a natural decaying process. There are no more external energy produced to create the texture. No machine, no human energy are there to altered this process.
Is the host in use or produce movement ? If yes, energy is produced to create this texture. In this case i have divided the texture being active or semi-active.
Active means that the texture is the direct result of the energy produced to create it.
Semi-active means that the texture is the result of an energy produced by the host but is not directly linked to the movement itself but will intrinsically shape the texture.
Thats the basics of my work and here are a little selection of texture work with there categories:
A classic. Passive texture. Natural decaying process, no movement or energy is produced to create this texture.
Active texture. A machine is used and produces projections that are directly the cause of this to happen i only reduce brightness and added a bit of hoe to make like a spatial effect. I usually don't altered colors with hoe but for this it seems ok to use it.
Semi-active. This is the result of an energy produced, but indirectly causing the texture to form. Meaning that the texture is not directly the result of this movement even though the movment is the cause this but because energy is there it has an impact on it indirectly depending on what this texture is.
There is no better or not good categories. It's not about performances. There are beautifull textures in all categories but it helps me some how to clarify what sort of energy i am looking at when making photographs.
