We have a new student at home from Spain. She is probably the nicest and most dedicated to helping our home since we started in this program. She is here to finish high school and is also learning English. She already communicates in English very well, but of course going to school in a new language is totally different. One thing that amazed me about her is that she was curious about what I do at work and started asking questions after I explained it. The research on resistance genes in bacteria, for example. She looks very good at logic and math, but she also has that thing that makes me admire a person: the power to question, to have curiosity.
However, she is getting difficulties in school. Especially with Biology. You know, when more than one person complains about something or someone, it means that maybe the complaint is true? All the girls that we have at home who had biology with this teacher complained a lot. It looks like he loves exams; every week they have one. And mostly the exams are just focused in memorize terms. That is the best way to create a phobia in students.
The new girl is totally panicked because she doesn't have fluent English, especially with terms that she isn't used to reading or listening to. She didn't know what the word " moose " means. In Spanish, the word is different,t and some animals don't show up often in movies unless you are watching too many Canadian movies. And the teacher doesn't look very helpful during those tests with the foreign students.
Last Saturday I was reading with her about the topic that she was studying: "Ecology", and it was focused on the Canadian biome. I helped her to understand some specific plant and animal names, and also, unfortunately, with this teacher, she would need to memorize some terms. So I gave her some tips on how I learned to deal with these problems; maybe one or two might help, but one thing that I told her is to chill out; a bad grade with this teacher doesn't mean that she was less intelligent. That is the problem: you start to feel that the problem is you, but it isn't.
We still have 5 more years until my oldest daughter goes to high school; I just hope that this teacher retires soon! Maybe we will get luckier if there is another teacher. And I hope that this girl doesn't get affected by this poor teaching style. And hopefully I can help her to learn if the teacher can't do that, at least what is important to learn from all those buzzy words that she needs to memorize.
Temos uma nova estudante em casa, vinda da Espanha. Ela é provavelmente a pessoa mais gentil e mais dedicada a ajudar em nossa casa desde que começamos nesse programa. Ela está aqui para terminar o ensino médio e também está aprendendo inglês. Ela já se comunica muito bem em inglês, mas é claro que estudar em uma escola em um novo idioma é algo totalmente diferente. Uma coisa que me impressionou nela é que ela ficou curiosa sobre o que faço no trabalho e começou a fazer perguntas depois que expliquei. A pesquisa sobre genes de resistência em bactérias, por exemplo. Ela parece ser muito boa em lógica e matemática, mas também tem aquela coisa que me faz admirar uma pessoa: o poder de questionar, de ter curiosidade.
No entanto, ela está tendo dificuldades na escola. Especialmente em Biologia. Sabe quando mais de uma pessoa reclama de algo ou de alguém? Isso significa que talvez a reclamação seja verdadeira, não é? Todas as meninas que tivemos em casa e que tiveram Biologia com esse professor reclamaram muito. Parece que ele adora provas; toda semana elas têm uma. E, na maioria das vezes, as provas são simplesmente focadas em memorizar termos. Essa é a melhor maneira de criar uma fobia nos alunos.
A nova garota está totalmente em pânico porque não tem fluência em inglês, especialmente com termos que ela não está acostumada a ler ou ouvir. Ela não sabia o que a palavra " moose " significa. Em espanhol, a palavra é diferente, e alguns animais não aparecem com frequência em filmes, a menos que você assista a filmes canadenses demais. E o professor não parece ser muito prestativo durante essas provas com os alunos estrangeiros.
No último sábado, eu estava estudando com ela o assunto que ela estava aprendendo: "Ecologia", e o foco era o bioma canadense. Eu a ajudei a entender alguns nomes específicos de plantas e animais e também, infelizmente, com esse professor, ela precisaria memorizar alguns termos. Então dei a ela algumas dicas de como aprendi a lidar com esses problemas; talvez uma ou duas possam ajudar, mas uma coisa que disse a ela foi para ficar tranquila; uma nota ruim com esse professor não significa que ela seja menos inteligente. Esse é o problema: você começa a sentir que o problema é você, mas não é.
Ainda temos mais 5 anos até que minha filha mais velha vá para o ensino médio; só espero que esse professor se aposente logo! Talvez tenhamos mais sorte se houver outro professor. E espero que essa garota não seja afetada por esse estilo de ensino ruim. E espero que eu possa ajudá-la a aprender se o professor não conseguir fazer isso, pelo menos o que é importante aprender de todas essas palavras complicadas que ela precisa memorizar.
