Let's do Warp Speed - Light Painting a historic train

This night was once again triggered by Light Painting enthusiast Danilo who said lets photograph these trains that are in Dresden. When he sent me the images I was like yeah let's do that. Not thinking of the possible challenges ahead. Long story short: to get some decent Light Paintings was harder than expected but I think we went home with a bunch of cool shots. Here I want to share the first results of that night.

Also, I will share some impressions about the location. Lots of little features that are worth photographing. If there was a bit more time this could be an entire book's worth of material if you are into that topic.

In this blog post, I will share some first shots highlighting the halfway newly painted train on the right. What you see here is one of the two trains where I light up the front of the train and then keep some light on a pan to the left side so it looks like the train is accelerating to warp speed.

Hier gibts also erste Ergebnisse dieser Nacht.

What were the settings?

Not a super complicated shot yet not as easy as imagined.

What you see is a featured Light Painting is a single 11 second exposure time photograph. The camera was always set to ISO 100 and the Lens to F11.

Behind the scenes - What else is there interesting?

When we arrived we first just saw two trains. The moment we got the story and the background it got more and more interesting. At the end of the night we were totally facinated by the project.

Fazinierendes Projekt!

Project: Ein Zug für Mitteldeutschland

"A train for Central Germany"

20220402_200815lr_2.jpg

A train for central Germany

I find the project super interesting! But what is it about you ask? First, what are these trains, and what makes them special?

The multiple units of the VT 18.16 series, also known as the SVT type Görlitz, were the flagship of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in the GDR for decades. The high-quality trains were used on international connections to Scandinavia, Austria, and Czechoslovakia. The train route known as Vindobona via Prague to Vienna was particularly well known. Great importance was attached to the equipment and condition, and the catering on the train also met international standards. From the pride of the Deutsche Reichsbahn, the eight trains built, three are still left, but none is operational. That is supposed to change now so the project is fundraising to reconstruct these trains.

What does the project want to achieve?

The aim of the "A train for Central Germany" project is to make a class VT 18.16 express multiple units operational again and to operate it in special and charter train operations over the long term.

As the project will be successful you, and I mean you can then rent the train and use it for events.

Ein Zug für Mitteldeutschland

Ich finde das Projekt super interessant! Aber worum geht es eigentlich? Was macht die Züge so besonders?

For Exhibitions, there was also a small playground model for kids to enter and pretend to drive the train. Super cool!

The non-profit intends to use that and exhibit these at train and tourism fairs once again.

The care in detail is amazing. Even the napkins are being reproduced in the same way as many years ago. First examples.
