My first time underwater Light Painting
Super excited to share this with you.
This post marks the beginning of a long-awaited path of artistic exploration. I have always been curious and actually attempted a few times to go underwater with light tools. This fits into the theme of curiosity tying every interesting technique. You saw me light painting on six continents in the air and underground. When I see other photographers getting the chance to rent a pool or shoot out in the ocean at night I get this tingling in my hands. I want to explore the dark depth of the sea.
For a few years, I was putting it out far into the future. Often I would wait for the right moments for the universe to put all the right pieces in place. I think the time is right now. My colleague invested in an underwater case by Ikelight for his all-new Canon R6. Him doing that I was not only curious but asked to join an equipment test dive at the local Dive center.
The local dive center has 3 pools one can rent and that's what we did. On top of the camera gear test, I brought a few light tools in case we actually find the time to get a few photos done.

Dieser Beitrag markiert den Beginn eines lang erwarteten künstlerischen Weges. Ich war schon immer neugierig und habe tatsächlich ein paar Mal versucht, mit leichten Werkzeugen unter Wasser zu gehen. Ihr habt mich schon Light Painten auf sechs Kontinenten in der Luft und im Untergrund gesehen. Wenn ich andere sehe, die die Chance bekommen, einen Pool zu mieten oder nachts draußen im Meer zu fotografieren, bekomme ich dieses Kribbeln in den Händen. Ich wollte schon lange mal die dunklen Tiefen des Meeres mit Licht zu erkunden.
Ewig immer aufgeschoben und auf den richtigen Moment gewartet. Das Universum hat nun richtigen Puzzelteile zusammengesetzt. Mein Kollege hat in ein Unterwassergehäuse von Ikelight für seine neue Canon R6 investiert. Ich bin dann gleich mit als er und seine Frau die Ausrüstung im örtlichen Tauchzentrum getest haben.
Das örtliche Tauchcenter verfügt über 3 Pools, die man mieten kann, und das haben wir auch getan. Ich habe dann gleich ein paar Licht-tools mitgebracht, falls wir tatsächlich ein paar Fotos machen.
Equipment test day
Most important to Ernst was to test the underwater photography rig. I hoped for some long exposures and brought some underwater flashlights and a plexi rod and a piece of silk.
We used the Ikelite 200DL Underwater Housing for Canon EOS R6, R6 II Mirrorless Digital Camera

Für Ernst war es am wichtigsten, die Unterwasserfotografieanlage zu testen. Ich hoffte auf einige Langzeitbelichtungen und brachte Unterwassertaschenlampen, einen Plexistab und ein Stück Seide mit.

The Location
You see 3 pools. Yet it's kind of one setup. These 3 pools are connected and allow you to swim through all of them. When you book this place you may get lucky and have it all for yourself.
Hier gibts 3 Pools. Eigentlich ja nur einer. Diese 3 Becken sind miteinander verbunden und ermöglichen dir von einem zum anderen durchzuschwimmen. Wenn Ihr den Pool bucht, habt Ihr vielleicht Glück und habt die für euch allein.
The light tool - Learnings
As anticipated the two light tools I brought worked as hoped. The silk needs a flash to show off but the plexiglass rod worked very well and simpel. The handling of it underwater is predictable and easy. The silk is a bit more random and chaotic. I think I may get into a purchasing spiral of underwater flashlights. GAS = Gear Aquisition Syndrom incoming 😤
Wie erwartet funktionierten die beiden Licht-Werkzeuge, die ich brachte. Die Seide braucht einen Blitz, aber der Plexiglasstab hat so sehr gut funktioniert. Die Handhabung unter Wasser ist vorhersehbar und einfach. Die Seide ist etwas schwieriger zu handhaben. She mich schon wieder Taschenlampen kaufen. GAS = Gear Aquisition Syndrom incoming.
Result check!
Initially, we played around with the conditions and tested different settings. Our Exposure times were only a few seconds. For this day, we only wanted to have long exposures and ensure the camera is not moving and we get to show some light painting.
Zu Beginn haben wir verschiedenste Einstellungen getestet. Unsere Belichtungszeiten betrugen zunächst nur wenige Sekunden. Ich wollte eh nur Langzeitbelichtungen machen und sicherstellen, dass sich die Kamera nicht bewegt. Einfach mal ein bisschen Light Painting zeigen.
We did test a piece of silk and some ducks to sit on the floor of the pool. Just to get something in the frame. In the future, we plan to explore more in the pool and then in a lake or ocean with a model. Let's see what the universe provides here as inspiration and chances to do that.
Wir testeten ein Stück Seide und ein paar Enten, die auf dem Boden des Pools saßen. In Zukunft ich nochmal im Pool testen und dann ab in einen See oder ins Meer mit einem Model. Mal sehen, was das Universum hier an Inspiration und Möglichkeiten dazu bietet.
