This generation has seen tons of great console releases, and if I could I'd very well damn get 'em all, but I can't - so I had to pick.
I'll go through process of elimination here:
Switch: Already owned 3, games and the online service are too expensive here. Only had them because of trades or to flip them for a profit (besides the first one which I played for over a year).
PS5: Looks absolutely wonderful design-wise, has a great selection of exclusives and PS Plus is quickly becoming a better and better competitor to Gamepass - but doesn't quite reach the mark for me yet. As much as it's pretty, it lacks things that the Xbox has that I find essential, and Gamepass is for now at least still a better deal. (Also, PS Now doesn't work in Brazil, so that's a bummer).
Series X: Almost perfect, but it's too big and cumbersome, hard to carry around on the bus to my friend's or girlfriend's places, it's also too expensive, even more so than the PS5 at least here in Santa Catarina state.
So why does the Series S fit the criteria I want?
- Size
As I previously eluded with the Series X, I'm taking my console around everywhere. Be it to my best friend's place for some Tekken matches, to my girlfriend's house to play co-op games or out on vacation in Florianópolis.
So the Series S being this compact, even smaller than the One S I owned before is a huge plus. I remember seeing one for the first time on a shopping center and thinking "Holy shit! This looks like the Wii, it's so small" - that's when I immediately fell in love with its design and small size.
It reminded me of taking my Wii to our vacations in my cousin's place and playing Gamecube games on it. I knew it would be the best console for portability right out of the gate.
Of course it doesn't beat the Switch on this respect, but as a full fledged non-portable console, it's the best one for frequent travellers like me.
- Gamepass
Even if I have some respect for PS Plus and used it for 3 months when I had a PS4, it just doesn't beat Gamepass Ultimate.
Getting access to hundreds of games + all the perks it gives you and also the EA library is just awesome.
There's also the fact you can get free months of Gamepass by simply playing regularly because of the rewards app.
(About 100 of those titles are mine/not Gamepass/EA Play related)
It's a seriously great library, and even on "slow months" without big AAA releases, we get great indie experiences, which I see people downplaying a lot, but we've got some amazing indie experiences that I would've never played otherwise - like my current favourite RPG Chained Echoes.
- Backwards Compatibility
This right here makes Xbox stand out the most for me.
The fact that you can still buy and play games from 20 years ago made for vastly different hardware and have a better experience than back then is simply incredible.
There are so many great games that would otherwise be stuck on those older systems that are fully playable and sometimes play even better on the Series S|X thanks to FPS boost (available on both) and 4K upscaling (Series X).
And not to mention that if you own a Series X, you can even use your original game discs. Sure, they just work as a license key for you to download and play the game, but that still means you can pick up $10 Xbox 360 games like the old CoD titles and play them online right now (specially now that the servers were fixed and there are hundreds of thousands of people playing them).
- Quick Resume
I didn't pay much attention to this feature when going for the Series line of consoles, but now that I've been using a Series S for a good while I can safely say: I can't live without this.
It's just so convenient to leave a game where it was and enter another one immediately.
Let's say you're in the middle of a Red Dead 2 mission and your friend hits you up for a match of Fortnite, you can just leave Red Dead, play that match and come back to right where you were before. It's pretty incredible.
It honestly feels the same as when I first installed an SSD on a PC of mine 8 years ago, with how fast everything opened up, the difference here is that things are never closed to begin with, they just remain opened on cache. I don't know how Microsoft pulled off this wizardry but it's a killer feature and something I'd miss dearly if I ever went to the PS5.
It even saves the state of your games if you turn off the console!
I only just found that out when I took it to my girlfriend's place last weekend. Booted it up only to find Yakuza Kiwami 2 was still where I left it on an important fight, made me lose no time at all. It's the best quality of life feature I've seen on a console.
So what's your opinion on Microsoft's offerings?
Thanks for reading!
