This post features the second series of 50 drawings in which black ink is painted on top of Topps 1991 baseball cards.
これは１９９１年のトップス社によるベースボールカードの上に、黒いインクを丁寧に塗りかさねる事によって作りあげた 作品５０枚の第２シリーズを特集しています。

After having pushed the imagery in Series 1 in a direction that tries really hard to say “this is not a baseball card”, a more subtle approach emerges: “well, maybe this is a baseball card”.
シリーズ１の作品は「これはベイスボールカードじゃない」と一生懸命隠す方向に押していたのに対し、このシリーズ２では「やっぱりベイスボールカードかもしれない」と言う微妙なアプローチがにじみ出ています。

Gestures, team logos, dashed outlines of human figures, and elements of faces begin to play a greater role in the composition and give away the fact that yes, there is a baseball card underneath the ink. Even the border frames of the original baseball cards, color-coordinated to match each team's uniforms, begin to show up in the images as colorful lines.
野球選手のジェスチャー、チームのロゴ、選手の体の線が作品の構図に大きく反映され、「この下にはベイスボールカードがあるんだな」と言う事実を語っています。ユニフォームと同じ色で描かれたベイスボールカードのフレームもこの作品の線画としてためらいなく使われています。

Moving beyond the busy clusters of both primary and biophilic shapes, a different approach surfaces in cards 88, 89, and 90: simpler letterform-esque compositions. We see a “U” in 88 and an “ICI” in 90. This idea of cards as letterforms will be explored years later.
カード８７くらいまでに見られる簡単な図形や自然体の形の集合したものを過ぎるとカード８８，８９，９０には別のアプローチが表れています。よりシンプルな文字型の構図です。カード８８にはアルファベットの「 Ｕ 」が、カード９０には「 ＩＣＩ 」が見えます。この文字型のカードのアイデアは私の数年後の作品に用いられる事になります。
