I recently had a burning desire to do a cover song. Never done one before, so I have no idea how it will turn out or if it will see the light of day.

Needless to say, the more I work on it, the LESS it sounds like the original at ALL.

I kind of wonder why this is so hard, lol. I mean, the song’s already written. What’s so hard to just redo it with my own spin?

And I had a revelation. I, like everyone, have more facets than just one thing. I produce music, but I’m also a writer.

I realized that for all these years I write music like I write prose. I start with a general idea, but then, as I work on it, the idea constantly evolves, ending up as something almost nothing like I had originally envisioned.

I’ve had tracks go through at LEAST seven different iterations, lol.

In the case of this song, I’m still excited about where it’s going, so I’m still working on it. We’ll have to see in the long run if it’s something I’m still satisfied with at the end of the process. Maybe.

Just think it’s kind of funny how we are constantly getting to know ourselves.

Have you ever had an AHA moment about yourself in this way? Let me know.
