Firstly, Airplane mode in a phone or tablet is a feature possessed by almost all phones to be able to shut down all connections (e.g Data Connection, hotspot, Wi-fi, Location Service and even Sim services). That means you can neither call no browse during the period your phone is in airplane mode..
Uses : It dosent really have much uses... but its a very fast and efficient way to turn all connections off incase you need to go to a meeting or somewhere. All you need is just that button.
Moreover you can switch it off... and once you do, all the connections, phone calls can now start coming in once again... its has really been helpful to me. And lets not forget to state the fact that it also conserves battery.
