Notice that I usually build a drawing with a sort of long "cone like shape", the arms the thighs and calves. They are just joined together to create the figure.
I am not doing much of the way of movement in this drawing. I am planning on having her arms up holding on to a backpack or device.
The head shape can be an approximate shape at this stage. As you can see I have sketched some lines really roughly in.
First line right down the middle from the top of the head to the chin - this gives you an idea of where the face will be looking.
Measure the eyes with a line at halfway down the head the eyes should be right on that line.
The nose is halfway between this line and the chin.
The mouth is halfway between the nose and the chin.
Once you understand these approximate measurements you will have no trouble ever knowing where each feature belongs.
So filling in the eyes and adding the features of the face - getting rid of the lines on the face and now we have a clearer idea of what she will look like.
Honestly when I am drawing I don't always know where I am going with the character.
So, this just feels like a "Lara Croft" kind of pony tail or a braid. She looks like a warrior and I decided on some kind of bat on her back.
Hmm... well I added an Aztec Looking kind of necklace, which could of course be some kind of mechanical sci fi instrument panel.
Went with wings... so looks like a fantasy fairy!
In the above image I have added some post-apocalyptic-style stockings and a loose chiffon-like fabric.
Added armor or just jewelry of her time on her arm as armguards.
Have fun with your characters. They don't have to make any sense whatsoever.
Now I have played with the wings quite a bit adding some interesting off-shoots and tried a veining style in the wings - aiming for a transparent look.
Also, adding texture and roughness to the stockings - maybe they should be tattered and full of holes. Maybe she should have some armor somewhere?
Light source on this drawing just above and maybe to the left of the screen. Remember this is just imaginary and it is good to have a light source in your mind or draw an arrow on the page - mine is there although very faint.
Shading or just adding graphite on the right side of the figure in the clothing etc.
This is the time when I like to focus on the detailed shading a little bit. A little darkness under her chin, and anywhere that there might be shadows. Think about the light - where would a shadow go?
Don't forget clothing also makes a shadow, jewelry, hair. Everything makes some shadow.
I only intended this character to be a sketch so not getting into too much more shading. Nope I think she looks completed.
I might make a large portrait of this character and get into more of her face or a character just like her. See the little bit fierce look on her face - I like that! Should explore that!
