Generally, monopoly is not good for business because of cases like this. The power that comes with monopoly can easily be abused, I hope your friend finds alternatives else he will keep paying out of pocket.
Though I believe that by getting supplies from the best, he should be able to sell the best and hence also have a pseudomonopoly of the business he is doing.
