when I learned to speak a reasonable amount of Thai I could get some of the touts to leave me alone but then other times they would just continue their ripoff sales tactic in their own language. In other situations such as in Bangkok I discovered that a lot of the touts don't even speak Thai. Many of them were Burmese but I still can't visually tell the difference between the two nationalities.
