well you definintely shouldn't drink the water but it isn't as rational of a fear as you might be thinking. The locals don't drink it either and drinking water is basically free. There would be no incentive for places to serve cheap tap water to tourists. nobody drinks tap water there. I have only spent a couple of months in Mexico and never had even the slightest stomach issue. My family have lived there for years and not once, not one of them.
