Hello Hive family, today I bring you some information about one of the main Fortresses of Colonial Havana.
The Castillo de la Real Fuerza is one of the most emblematic fortifications of Old Havana and the oldest preserved castle in Cuba (begun in 1558).
Here are the key data:
· Location: In front of the bay, in the Plaza de Armas (O'Reilly and Tacón).
· Original function: Defense against pirates, although it was rebuilt after a fire in 1555.
· Architecture: It has a star-shaped plan, a (dry) moat and thick coral stone walls.
· The Grímpola: In its tower there is a bronze weather vane in the shape of a woman (La Giraldilla), which is the official symbol of Havana.
· Current use: It houses the Navigation Museum, with models of ships, nautical instruments and shipwrecks.
