This might not be the main point of this article but...law firm doesn't pay well in your place? Darn that is harsh. Law career is considered a high income and sought for career in my place.

As for the phone, I think sticking to your budget is perfect. Sometime you wish you have a better phone, as most people do, but the reality is that most of the time those high-end phones don't get utilized enough by most customers to be that expensive in the first place. At some point their value stems from possessing them (and showing them off) more than anything. Practically, sticking to a budget and not over-chasing on them is fine unless you have a lot of money. I think you made the right decision.
