Take an average Austrian ski instructor and I bet he/she is already a better skier than the best skier in the Netherlands. No offense but we Dutchies are not a ski-country because we have no mountains! But traveling and partying we do like so each winter period - starting next week already - hundreds of thousands go to the Alps to ski or snowboard. Favourite are Austria and France either by car or train whereas Switzerland (as in "Gstaad" and "Sanct Moritz") is just too expensive. Italy and Slovenia make up the other possibilities. By car it is some 10 huurs drive if not in the busiest period that is.
The other possibility is the Dutch enclave Winterberg (what a suiting name ) in the German region called Sauerland just right of the Ruhrgebiet/Dortmund. That is only three hours from the Netherlands and gives hills up to 800 mtrs but no snow guarantee of course.
But what to book - as in my case - your wife does not want to ski but still wants to see some snow for a few days ?
Well, I just booked us a three day stay at the edge of the Sauerland in Bad Arolsen in Sauerland with Spa included. The hotel is next/part of an old castle.
So on thee day of arrival we will go walking, have diner and the next day we will be in the Spa half of the day and make a trip to a ski area whether there is snow or not. Can't wait!
