I recently watched a movie where an ancestor made a serious decision, and generations later, his descendants were still suffering the consequences of something they didn't do and didn't even know about

It got me thinking, can someone genuinely inherit the consequences of another person's actions without inheriting the blame? And at what point, if any, does an old wrong stop being the responsibility of the people who came after?
