I NEVER use straw. It doesn’t work well and is dangerous when wet. I’ve always used hay. Used properly (and most people don’t use it correctly) I’ve always found it superior and cheaper than straw. The weeds are only a problem if it gets too thin. I’ve only weeded the gardens once or twice all season, for about an hour or less each time.
