Mulch2 crop June 2018.jpg

There’s a barn near us that has hay stored in it. We often find waste hay out behind it that we are allowed to take. We found some back there a couple days ago, so it’s mulch moving time again.

We headed out early Thursday morning and got a truckload. We often do it in the early morning and every time we are struck by the beauty of the hay meadow beyond the barn.

The farmer has said it will remain as it is for his lifetime.

So reassuring to know such a lovely place will be preserved.

So we got busy with our pitchforks. My husband grabbed the coveted fork, so he got to climb down to get the hay fallen below.

I went to work on the pile on top with the less satisfactory fork.

The 2 piles loaded the truck right up, so we brought it home and unloaded it. There were 2 more piles left, but one looked like maybe something the farmer would re-bale. Turns out he’d thought about it, but he said we could take it. So we had 3 more loads for Friday morning.

We’d had no rain so I was watering veg gardens. That determined where this load would go: to the Small veg garden. This is how far it went.

We got the 3 loads first thing Friday morning.

The next area to mulch is the first 3 rows of the New Herb garden. Will this pile finish it? Stay tuned to find out….

Saturday morning we start the strawberry picking. In the next 2 days I hope to pick 35#, about 3 flats full. So mulching will have to wait until Monday morning…
