Czech Easter Special: Green Beer / Zelený velikonoční speciál
The green beer tradition is not actually a tradition, green beer has been around for about twenty years only. It started as a rather successful marketing campaign (Green Thursday = Green Beer) of one of the larger and shittiest breweries. However, many better breweries took up the glove and started brewing their own green specials. The best ones use herbs to colour the beer while the cheaper and worse ones stick with artificial colourings. This one comes from the Monastery Brewery in Břevnov.
Tradice zeleného piva ve skutečnosti žádnou velkou tradicí není, začal ji jinak dost mizerný větší pivovar někdy před dvaceti lety. Tehdy šlo o docela úspěšnou marketingovou kampaň Zelený čtvrtek a zelené pivo patří k sobě.
In this case, stinging nettles are mixed with hops to dye the beer that would otherwise be a really good Czech lager. The nettles obviously affect the taste which is not easy to be described. You feel the beer is really bitter and “stings” a bit just like the herb itself. It is not a beer you could spend all the night with but to have a pint or two is a must once you stop by the monastery. Alas, it is not available anywhere but in the monastery.
V tomhle případě je pivo obarveno kopřivami. Jinak by šlo o klasickou klášterní dvanáctku, velmi dobré spodně kvašené pivo českého typu. Kopřivy pochopitelně hrají roli i v chuti piva, kterou není úplně jednoduché popsat.
Speaking about the brewery, the first one was established in 993. Yes, 993, no typo there. The monks used to brew beer to ease their mandatory fastings. It may sound weir nowadays, but it was permitted by the pope himself back then. The current brewery was reopened in 2011. It offers a wide scale of different beers with a bunch of season specials. All beers are crafted, obviously, and super cheap, considering their quality – most of them costs just about CZK50-60 (€2-2.5). Seven of them are on tap every day.
The next beer I might write about is another Easter special – Smoked Lager. Well, maybe next week.
Další pivo, o kterém bych mohl psát, je jiný velikonoční speciál, nakouřený ležák českého typu. Uvidíme, třeba příští týden.
