There are many beautiful churches all around the Troodos Mountains. Some of the most important ones are in Kakopetria and its surroundings. And a bunch of minor churches as a bonus – the village used to be wealthy enough to show its devotion in a very representative manner. See my previous post for further details about the village, or keep reading for a free tour around the churches. The last one belongs to the set of ten painted byzantine churches that are declared a UNESCO world heritage site. But let’s start in the very heart of Kakopetria - Church of Metamorphoseos tou Sotiros.
V pohoří Troodos je spousta krásných kostelů. Některé z těch nejdůležitějších jsou v Kakopetrii a přilehlém okolí. A krom toho spousta těch méně důležitých.
The church from the early 16th century demonstrates the architectonical style of the village. The door was open on one of our three attempts to get in but as an elder lady was devoutly praying inside, I didn’t dare to take pictures to not to interrupt her.
The Cypriot church used to own most of the land on Cyprus, hence many churches had facilities to process food that was grown around them. Olive oil presses like this one used to be common on church yards.

Agios Panteleimon Church is located just a few hundred metres from the historical village and at the edge of the new Kakopetria. It was reconstructed in the early 90’s and serves as the main church of Kakopetria. I personally didn’t find it really special so let’s just pass it.
Panagia Theotokos Church with a bit uncommon side entrance is basically just across the road. And yes, it actually is next to a gas station. The church is from the early 16th century and usually not open for public. Liturgies takes place here just once or twice a year.
This building may not be a church, I cannot find it on any map. Yet it looked like one and the decoration also suggests it either. On second thought, it might have been some kind of a clergy house or a hermitage.
Here I am back on track again, this is a church for sure. It is called Agia Paraskevi and its paintings come from the early 16th century while the building may be a bit older. Alas, Agia Paraskevi is not open to public either. The church is surrounded by a little park with a playground. It still has its wooden bellower with a bell.
And we enter Galata, the neighbouring village. Ierós Naós Panagías Odigítrias or Church of the Virgin Mary Hodegetria is the main one in Galata. Surprisingly, it was not open, so I only have a few photos of the exterior.
To už jsme v sousední vesnici, Galatě.
Agios Nikolas Church and its bell tower, our last stop before the main goal of our walk.
Kostel Agios Nikolas a jeho zvonička, poslední zastávka před hlavním cílem naší cesty.
This church and the chapel are the main reason we took this passage, a bit spiritual one if you will. They are protected by UNESCO and nicely reconstructed. We’d hoped they would be open just like Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis but neither of them was. Anyways, I also enjoyed the final part of the walk. You need to leave the road and walk past an old mill by the river first, continue by a water canal through unexpectedly wild vegetation until you reach a plain.

The church and monastery was built in 1502 by a Greek military officer who moved to Cyprus becouse of his duty. Its frescoes have never been finished. Most of them are from the 18th century.
Kostel a klášter nechal v roce 1502 postavit řecký vojenský důstojník, kterého služba přivedla na Kypr. Fresky v kostele nejsou dokončené, většina z nich je z 18. století.
The small chapel was built and decorated in 1514 and was originally dedicated to Virgin Mary. Some of its frescoes were painted over later on and eventually it was renamed to Archangel Michael Chapel.
And a bonus for those who read the entire post: this is a regional bus stop (see the sign on the secon picture) in Galata. Surprisingly enough, the bus came more or less in time and the driver didn’t mind the car much.
Ten kupodivu dorazil víceméně včas a auto v cestě řidičovi nevadilo.
