This year has been hectic since the start of the school year, but things got even busier once summer break began. A mom-friend of mine invited my younger son to join a summer-only softball team, and he ended up joining.

During summer break, there's practice every Saturday and Sunday morning. Since it was his first year, I worried and came along every single time — suddenly surrounded by unfamiliar faces (the coach, the assistant coaches, all the other parents), my head was in a mild state of panic.

I'm not good at small talk. But I couldn't exactly say that, so I tried my best to go along with everyone... though I honestly have no idea if I managed to blend in or not 😂

Between the heat and the social exhaustion, I'd come home barely able to keep my eyes open... and every afternoon I'd have to nap until sunset just to recover. That was basically every weekend.

And because of that connection, last week I somehow ended up playing in the PTA volleyball tournament (I'm bad at saying no, too). I went in with a "whatever happens, happens" attitude. Though once I was actually playing, it turned out to be surprisingly fun.

My natural habitat is really just the corner of my room, quietly working at my PC — that's all I need to feel content. Back when my older son was in elementary school, I fully embraced being what I'd call a "lone-wolf mom" so having few acquaintances stopped bothering me long ago.

But this year, especially this summer, my connections with other people suddenly multiplied all at once, and I think it's left me a little thrown off. I've realized my shyness around people is never really going away.

That said, even though I'm genuinely, thoroughly exhausted, the people I got to know this summer were all wonderful. What I'm left feeling now is gratitude.

The local parents and dads who show up at the field every weekend to help the kids with softball practice — even though they must have work on weekdays...

I find myself wondering where all that energy comes from, and at the same time, it's made me reflect on my own overly individualistic way of living for so long.
