Technology as evolving as ever has gotten to a stage where animals cannbe effectively controlled for grazing.

Fencing is one of the oldest management tools for controlling livestock movement, protection and access to pasture for grazing, but there is a new way to achieveing that.
Dr Christiana Umstatta said “The problem with physical fences is they take flexibility out of grazing. The invention of electronic fencing in the 1930s gave farmers some flexibility but it’s still not enough: Virtual fencing is where we need to go.” Dr Christiana Umstatta
The virtual fencing prototypes have relied on GPS technology up to date, which has kept animals in a defined area with an animal-mounted device that delivers a shock or noise to keep the livestock away from any particular area.
It is interesting to note that research has shown that cattle respond best to these visual and audio cues, which is why Dr Umstatta has invested in a systems which teaches the cows to recognise coloured flags or lights that indicates when they can move to fresh pastures for their grazing.
A cybernetic grazing management system in which the measurement of the grass height via animal-mounted collars are taken is another technology to help with animal grazing.
This information is geo-referenced and then sent to a phone where it can calculate the grazing allocation for the livestock.

Furthermore, the grass is measured and the data is sent. A calculated pasture perimeters to the cow, which then gives them time to move to the selected or specified area. This then has a feedback system that reports back on the feeding allocation.
This type of technology is most needed in Nigeria where there are issues of grazing cattles and farmers alike that has cost the lives of thousands of people.
It is unfortunate our governments are never ahead in embracing new technologies that would benefit every Nigerian.
