Hey, @galenkp.
My wife doesn't do a lot of socializing without me, but she will buy some snacks or goodies here and there. Usually, I'm the last to know and so they sit for an undetermined amount of time before I become aware of them, and then on many occasion, they will sit there for another week or two before I decide they must be fair game. Because she's not eating them.
And then, depending on what they are and how many, I might string them out over another period of time, making note of whether the count has gone down in addition to the damage I'm doing.
That's usually about the time (perhaps as long as a month in, that I know of) where there's only a few left that my wife will discover what's happened and then I'm in trouble for eating them.
And I'm like, Well, why are they here? If I'm not supposed to eat them, either don't buy them, don't bring them home, or put a sign on them. Don't just leave them out unprotected and unclaimed for me to eventually stumble upon! They've been there for at least a month!
This, of course, has been a recurring thing for most of our marriage, but mostly over the last half of it where my weight is way up and she wants me to lose. So, she buys chocolates, cookies, puddings, chips, etc. :)
