Ah. Okay. Cool.

It looks like they are not the same. MS owns GitHub but not GitLab. GitLab was using some sort of MS service before the GitHub acquisition, but then went to another cloud platform ran by Google.

Still, it looks like they have a large investment from Google Ventures, along with some others, so while they're still owned by the same people who founded it, it sounds like they're pretty well connected.
