Ah, yes. We remember how this went. First they installed the fare gates at every station, even renovating some, but left them open until eventually they closed and the card system was put in place. We miss the days where you bought a paper ticket on the bus, put it in your pocket and just walked on the skytrain. If you were beyond the painted fare paid zone sign then you were subject to showing your ticket to a transit employee if asked. As soon as compass came in the police, not just transit guards were constantly patrolling the station and entrances. It felt like an Orwellian nightmare...something was off but it was nothing compared to lately! They could have easily made the buses dispense compass tickets, but they want to punish people who use cash by making them pay twice unless their trip starts at a station instead of on the bus.
